INTERVIEW: FUNKE AKINDELE SPEAKS ON HER NEW MOVIES & HER ROLE IN TUNDE KELANI’S MAAMI

Funke Akindele is a youth ambassador, she loves doing films and movies that would inspire and empower the youths and influence their lives positively. In this interview, I spoke to the award winning actress on her new 20 million naira movie, The Return of Jenifa TROJ ,her new movie ‘Awa Okunrin’ and ‘Maami’ the movie by foremost cinematographer in Nollywood, Tunde Kelani, where she played the lead role.
How huge will the transformation of Suliat your character be in TROJ?
It’s going to be a big one, The Return of Jenifa is the transformation of ‘Suliat’ from a village CHAMPION to a Lagos ‘bigs’ girl, Instead of the usual Suliat kan Ayetoro kan, she’s now Suliat kan Lagos kan.
Everyone is anxious to know about Jenifa’s health condition in the movie?
TROJ elaborates more on the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the youths being susceptible to it. It emphasizes the need for constant HIV test. Like I said before stars like TROJ stars Eldee, Kaffy, Freeze Of Coolfm, Banky W,Whiz Kid, Sasha,Naeto C, The Late Cd John
,Omawunmi, Helen Paul, Denrele and lots of others featured in the movie just to drum that point home.
Your movie Awa Okunrin is making waves now, what is the storyline?
Awa Okunrin is a curtain raiser and an expose on the extent that men would go to either cover up their escapades or to throw baits at their supposed preys. The movie revolves around the exploits of both married and single men. Is it truly a Man’s world? Or how do you explain the popular Yoruba cliché that says “a man can have many wives, but a woman with two husbands is a prostitute”? Another puzzling scenario is when a husband save his contact’s detail on his mobile with deceased names e.g. Hubert Ogunde! Awa Okunrin is a master piece and a reference point in solving matrimonial issues!
You are playing the lead role in Tunde Kelani’s ‘Maami’ what was the experience like?
The story revolves around Kashimawo, a successful footballer who, in
the period leading to the 2010 World Cup, reminisces about his
hardscrabble childhood in the southern Nigerian town of Abeokuta.
Ma’ami is different from other storylines I have interpreted. The movie is about a struggling single parent who sees sacred responsibility in raising her only child, Kashimawo. Like every responsible Yoruba mother, she struggles to sponsor the education of her only child. She runs a small stall that demystifies the myth of the middle class.
When will the movie be out?
Pretty soon, but in celebration of the re-election of the Lagos State Governor, His Excellency Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola , Maami premiered on Saturday, the 4th of June 2011 at the Agip Recital Hall Muson Centre Onikan, Lagos by 6:00PM . The Film will also premiere in other parts of the country and dates will be announced soon
