The country's football federation said the winger was travelling from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi when his car crashed.
The rising star, who played for UAE club Bani Yesi, is thought to have been travelling with his 13-year-old brother at the time.
His brother is believed to be in intensive care.
Local media have conflicting reports on what happened with Sport 360 saying he lost control of the car, while The National claims the car he was driving collided with a lorry.
Awana was best remembered for scoring a back-heeled penalty in the UAE’s 6-2 friendly win against Lebanon in July, which was viewed over one million times on You Tube.
UAE National Team director Ahmed Saeed told television station Dubai Sports 1: "Theyab came to practice but he didn’t participate because he was injured. The accident happened when he was returning to Abu Dhabi.
“The UAE has lost one of its stars who had a bright future in world football.”
Awana won seven caps for the UAE senior team after being a star for a number of the country's youth teams.
