The Chief Executive Officer and Commissioner of the Professional Golfers of Nigeria Tour, Shola Lawson (Jnr) has resigned his position after the expiration of his contract with the golf body.
Lawson, a marketing communications stalwart, was appointed in 2007 to oversee and increase the sponsorship stake of the PGA Tour. He said in a release to the media that he would not be renewing his contract after his four- year term elapsed.
Lawson said he was proud to have made his contributions to the development of professional golf in Nigeria by raising the Tour’s prize purse as well as enhancing the mindshare of the game with corporate targets. “The last four years have given me the privilege of making modest contributions to the development of pro golf in Nigeria. We have raised the bar in terms of tournament organisation, winning purses, sponsor ROI's, media support and player remunerations.
“It has been a privilege serving as the first CEO of the PGA Nigeria Tour. I hope that the history of Nigerian golf will find my humble contributions and service worthy of mention for posterity,” Lawson said.
The PGA Tour was established in 2007 by Olusola Adekanola, Uyi Akpata and other stakeholders, to secure tournaments for the professional body and help better the standard of Nigerian golfers. But there has always been a mix up between the role the Tour should play in the life of the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria (PGAN).
Over the years and particularly this year, paucity of tournaments has been the lot of the Tour, as the pro body has only succeeded in securing four tournaments this year, CMCL Open, Memorial tournament, Emir of Kano and the Otukpo Pro Am.
But in spite of the challenges, Lawson said he had succeeded in meeting his set goals by nurturing the birth of a new era and raising awareness of the Nigerian Tour professionals in and outside
Africa.
